The
gay grapevine has been abuzz with news of the Western Cape’s
long-awaited country getaway for men only.
Shisa Guest Farm is a mere 80 minutes from Cape Town in the
picturesque Tulbagh valley with its historic architecture and
award winning wine farms and olive estates. Joe and Francois
sensed that there is a need for a spot where gay men can “chill”
and be in touch with nature and escape the stresses of city
life. For this reason guests are encouraged to experience nature:
ample sunshine, the expanse of the veld, mountain views, fresh
air, the bird life and the starry skies. This is accentuated
by the unique South African "farm style" architecture
and décor. This has been described as "African Zen
Chic" and many foreign visitors to Shisa have commented
that it is "a special African experience". The buildings
blend seamlessly with the surrounding landscape and a short
walking trail takes one through the Eucalyptus forest and along
the river
.All the rooms are “en-suite” and have mountain
views, private patios and queen size beds with crisp white linen.
The “honeymoon suite” features a large bath, a shower,
a private garden and a lounge with a fire place and day bed
and includes coffee / tea facilities, champagne, snacks and
luxurious toiletries.
Facilities
/ services
The swimming pool, tanning deck, seating areas with beautiful
views, picnic spots at the river, the steam room and a bar/lounge/dining
area with a large fire place all add to your enjoyment at Shisa.
With plenty of privacy and sunshine, guests are welcome to treat
"clothing as optional", while the motto is that everyone
should do what they feel comfortable with.
Depending on the weather, meals are served in the dining room,
on the veranda or under the vine-covered pergola where you can
relax while sipping the famous Krone Borealis "bubbly"
produced by Twee Jonge Gezellen – just one of the famous
wine estates in the area.
Shisa is also a perfect base for exploring nearby wine and fruit-producing
areas such as Ceres and the Breederiver Valley. For those wanting
to experience solitude, the expanse of the Ceres-Karoo is one
hour away.
The 80 minute drive from Cape Town to Shisa could make a worth-while
day-trip or a night or two "out in the country" with
longer scenic trips via the best of the Cape's wine-producing
areas.
